UCMI attends 9th International Congress of the Society for Vector Ecology

The University of California Malaria Initiative (UCMI) was proud to participate at this year’s Society for Vector Ecology (SOVE) Annual Conference, held 12-17 October in Chania, Crete. The event brought together professionals from across the globe who are involved in diverse areas of research and operations related to vector biology and control.

Greg Lanzaro, UCMI Principal Investigator, participated in the Vector Management: Integrated Strategies and Innovative Tools segment of the conference presenting his talk titled “Genetically engineered mosquitoes with gene drive for malaria elimination: Moving the technology from the lab to the field”.  Greg shared information about the UCMI program, and the important translational research components that are involved when considering the application of gene drive technology for malaria elimination.  He emphasized that “the important difference between the UCMI strategy vs. all other vector control strategies is that it is not about killing the mosquito but about modifying the population of mosquitoes so that it cannot transmit the pathogen that causes the disease”.
